Get to know Byron Owen


Colonel Byron Owen served as an infantry, intelligence and cyberspace warfare officer in the Marine Corps. He is a Force Reconnaissance Marine with multiple combat tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Byron is a distinguished leader who had the privilege to command 1st Force Reconnaissance Company, Combat Mission Team One, Cyberspace Warfare Task Group 1, and 3d Radio Battalion. He is currently the Director of Intelligence for Marine Corps Cyberspace Command.

In 2006, his Combined Anti-Armor Team platoon served as the Quick Reaction Force for 1st of the 10th Mountain Division during the surge into Baghdad. This experience would later inspire the events in his upcoming book, Bury My Heart in Baghdad.

Byron is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a degree in English Literature, and holds advanced degrees in Defense Studies from the Naval War College and National Strategy from the National War College. He is presently a student at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business and a National Security Fellow at George Mason University. Byron is a Silver Star, Bronze Star, and triple Purple Heart recipient.
